Song of the day: Red Jacket Mine - "Listen Up (If The World Is Going To Hell)"

This relaxed phase I'm in at the moment (see the previous two Songs of the day) continues quite nicely with some decidedly non-power-pop from a band I'd never heard of before until a friendly American chappy by the name of Lincoln (Hi, Lincoln!) contacted me and asked if I wouldn't mind playing his band's music on this here blog.

(That sentence was way too long. Sorry about that.)

Lincoln's band is called Red Jacket Mine, and the two songs he sent were, I must say, a bit of a surprise. They're not power pop at all. In any way. (Well, a 12-string electric plays a bit of a riff in the first song, but that's as close to power pop as it gets.) As I was listening, I started up an imaginary one-sided conversation with Lincoln (who was nowhere around to answer my imaginary questions). I asked not-there Lincoln: "Lincoln – why did you send me these songs? I'm enjoying them, but why? To my ears, they're more soul than anything else. Why on Earth would you want to send me a couple of soul songs? This is a power pop blog. Now, don't get me wrong – I'm glad you sent me those songs. If you didn't, I wouldn't have heard them, and I love hearing new music, but... er... um... power pop blog... soul music... Huh?"

If Lincoln reads this (I'd say there's a fair chance he will, because I emailed him to let him know this post will appear on the blog today), I'd like to reassure him that he's under no obligation to my respond to my puzzlement. I'll just sit here, happily confused* as to why someone with a couple of soul songs would want me to air them on a power pop blog.

  2. You're welcome, Lincoln. I'm tempted to call it "Soulish", but I'd probably end up being the only one who ever did. What if I called it "Soulological"? Maybe that could catch on instead. Or how about "Soulfoalholebowltroll"? (Note to self: Nope.)
